The effects of propranolol on the systolic time intervals and hemodynamics in normal subjects.

Abstract
By means of noninvasive methods, the effects of propranolol on the systolic time intervals and hemodynamics in normal subjects were observed. The systolic time intervals and hemodynamic data were determined from high speed simultaneous recordings of the electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram, carotid and femoral pulse tracings before and after intravenous injections of propranolol in eleven normal subjects.
The electromechanical systole(QS2), left ventricular ejection time(LVET), pre-ejection period(PEP) and isovolumic contraction time(ICT) were prolonged significantly while the QS, interval was not changed. However, ICTI, PEPI, and LVETI which are corrected ICT, PEP and LVET, respectively, according to the pulse rate, stroke volume and diastolic blood pressure were not affected by propranolol administrations. PEP/LVET ratio and ICT/LVET ratio which are noninvasive indices of myocardial contractility were increased after propranolol, indicating decreased contractility.
Heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output were diminished concordantly . and peripheral resistance and diastolic blood pressure were increased in response to propranolol.
